Canker sore: Prevention & Treatment
Prevention
* Have a good oral hygiene. Use a soft toothbrush.
* Keep fingernails short and clean, especially for children who are having their mouths.
* Have a healthy life and relax.
* Avoid talking while eating to prevent mild trauma that this could lead to the mouth. These small injuries make mucous more vulnerable to the appearance of canker sores.
* Find a possible food intolerance or sensitivity and, if necessary, remove the food responsible.
* If in doubt, check with his dentist that his dentures fit.
* Avoid using toothpaste based on sodium codicil sulfate, although this is controversial (see "Causes" highest).
Medical treatment
* Medical treatment is mostly symptomatic. The doctor may prescribe mouthwash, creams and ointments analgesics or, in major cases, drugs based on antibiotics and steroids. These have the effect of accelerating the healing of canker sores while denying they expand.
* A solution analgesic called viscous lidocaine may be prescribed to alleviate pain and irritation caused by mouth ulcers. As the drug numbs the reflexes, it causes a choking hazard if you eat within hours. Some doctors therefore discourage use.
* When doubts persist about the nature of ulcers, the doctor recommends a biopsy. A pathologist will then decide on the specimen through a microscope to identify the type.
